QR code: what it is and how it works

QR Code is short for Quick Response Code and is now essential for making instant access to information about any product through a simple action on the smartphone, saving time and the difficulties inherent in manual entry.

What is the QR code?

It is a two-dimensional bar code, that is, a matrix on which black modules are arranged within a square white pattern; in the QR Code modules are stored useful and necessary information that is then detected thanks to the smartphone.

What information is stored in the QR code?

The information mainly stored within the QR Code is:

  • Website;
  • Texts;
  • Phone numbers, various contact information;
  • E- Mail;
  • Text;
  • Web address of a YouTube video;
  • Digital business card;
  • And any information on products and services you find useful.

The QR Code, then, contains a number used to store a variety of information about a product, website, service, but not only; today QR Codes are also used for artwork, in the fashion world. Read about all the uses of the QR Code.

Smartphones, tablets, cell phones are the access portals of the information provided by the QR Code. By framing the QR code with these devices, the information is accessed.

Where is the QR code located?

The QR Code now has such extensive applications that it would be reductive to make a list anyway. We limit ourselves to paper, that is, what can be printed easily and intuitively with a labeling machine:

We can find it on:

  • Product labels;
  • Flyers;
  • Posters;
  • Brochure;
  • Business cards;
  • Exhibitors;
  • Logos;
  • Artwork identifiers.

How long does a QR code last?

The QR Code does not expire; it lasts as long as it is visible, unless it is irreparably worn out or damaged.

Where do you download the QR code?

The QR Code has a free license, thanks to which it is now possible to find both free download and QR Code writing programs on the Internet.

Generally speaking, it has been since the late 2000s that QR codes have been installed in factory-issued smartphones, which is the practice in Japan.

How does the QR code work?

Once you have installed the QR Code reader, you need to open the app and frame the code, which is in turn captured and decoded. After decoding, all the information in it will be displayed.

The QR Code then works like a scan, made by placing the camera lens of one’s mobile device in front of the code.

How to decode the QR code

As mentioned, just frame it with any mobile device such as a smartphone, basically with the camera, which, by capturing the image detects its content: text, links and information that may be useful to the consumer.

Up to 4,296 alphanumeric, 7,089 numeric and 2,953 binary characters can be stored in QR Codes.

Thanks to the presence of the Reed-Salomon code, it is also possible to reconstruct any data that has been lost up to 30 percent, for example, in the case of scratches or damage. QR codes can also be made with artistic embellishments such as inserting the logo, without losing the encoded information.

The QR Code has also been used in art, combined with the downloading of music albums and video clips, for fashion houses.

Brief History of the QR Code

The first to develop the QR Code was the Japanese company Denso in 1994 for tracking Toyota car parts.

In fact, much more information could be entered through this system than through the classic bar code.

Later, the QR Code was used by other companies to improve inventory management. From 1999 onward, Japan’s leading telephone company, NTT docomo, made it possible to retrieve information on the Web via cell phone with the i-mode system, which kicked off the spread of applications for such devices.

QR codes had a large-scale spread in Japan because of their usefulness and convenience in retrieving information from the Web through a simple action performed with a smartphone, bypassing manual entry and related difficulties.

Also in Japan, QR codes were also popularized for business cards, which in this way were directly entered into the cell phone’s address book.

From 2005 onward, with the Semapedia project initiated in the United States, physical places and their descriptions have been linked to Wikipedia via QR codes.

The smartphone market has since encouraged the spread of QR codes in Europe as well.
