Assisted reality: how technology is changing the way we work

In recent years, the advent of assisted reality (AR) technology has revolutionized the way we do our work.

RA leverages the combination of multimedia and physical elements that, through various applications, improve efficiency, productivity, and the overall experience in various work settings.

Brief history of Assisted Reality

Assisted and augmented reality: with a head-mounted display system, it was computer scientist Ivan Sutherland, the “father of computer graphics,” who developed it in 1968 at Harvard.

The vision returned a three-dimensional image, without adding anything to the surrounding reality but offering a synthetic version of it, thus a “mediated reality.”

This contrivance was later perfected by companies, university laboratories and national agencies by declining it into wearable devices equipped with digital displays.

It was in 1990 that Boeing researchers Caudell and Mizell “donned” actual computers to facilitate the wiring of fuselage electrical systems through the projection on the display of data useful for the work at hand.

Since then, assisted and augmented reality have become increasingly perfected, “exploding” in the 2000s in part due to broadband wireless connectivity, with use allowed basically everywhere.

The basic concept was and is the overlay of physical (e.g., geo-localized) information about the environment with virtual information to perform simulations for military, industrial, and aeronautical purposes.

AR and commercial use

Regarding the commercial aspect of AR, it is necessary to wait until 2008, when some German agencies develop a print ad for BMW Mini that by superimposing a pc screen also appeared on the screen.

The technology was based on physical tracking indicators by which the virtual model was linked to the physical model (printed magazine).

Manipulating the piece of paper to view various angles of the product was a marketing idea that later involved several advertising campaigns, also used in publishing.

National Geographic in 2011 began applying more advanced versions, showing rare or extinct animals in real time, Disney and other major brands.

Usefulness of assistive reality

The usefulness of this technology on construction sites with focus on these three aspects was clear from the outset:

  1. Connecting technicians and experts in the field, partners and customers with remote experts for immediate help;
  2. Elimination of delays in troubleshooting so that companies have no downtime;
  3. Fast resolution of problems, reducing the need to travel and resulting in increased customer satisfaction.

RA: the connected devices

Assisted reality (AR) is based on the use of devices such as
smart glasses
, viewers or tablets, which enable users to view additional information directly in their field of vision.

RA can be used in many areas and has been shown to offer significant benefits.

Assisted reality, application examples: medicine and surgery

A tangible example of the application of assisted reality is in thehealth care sector.

Doctors can use smart viewers to display crucial information during surgeries (e.g., in orthopedics-source: https://medicinamoderna.tv/).

This allows them to access diagnostic images, monitor patients’ vitals or receive advice from specialists in real time, which can improve the accuracy of interventions and reduce risks.

Manufacturing industry

Even within themanufacturing industry, assisted reality has proven to be a valuable resource.

Workers can use smart glasses to access work instructions, technical diagrams and maintenance information without having to consult manuals or computers.

This reduces downtime, improves the quality of work and increases safety in the workplace.

Customer Service

Assisted reality is also finding application in the customer service sector as demonstrated by the experiences of Amazon and Ikea*.

Customer service managers can use it to view information about customer inquiries in real time, providing immediate and personalized responses.

For example, a call center operator can view a customer’s profile and history while talking to them, providing a more efficient and satisfying experience.

Vocational training

In addition, RA has proven its value in professional training.

Apprentices can use viewers or tablets to access interactive tutorials, realistic simulations and on-the-job instruction, facilitating the learning process and accelerating skill acquisition.

Ultimately, assisted reality is changing the way we work, offering a wide range of practical applications in a variety of fields.

From healthcare to industry, from customer service to vocational training, this technology is transforming the way we perform our daily activities.

It is an opportunity that, if well exploited, can lead to increased productivity, efficiency and overall worker satisfaction.

Fastbrain and Technological Innovation: the challenges we face

Every day we are faced with new challenges, with areas such as Assisted Reality and Augmented Reality, Wearable Device, Worker Safety, and we are dealing with many devices designed to speed up the transition to Industry 4.0 for all industries:

From Energy and Utilities, to Petroleum, Gas, Chemical, Food and Beverage, Construction, Mining, Transportation and Logistics, Automotive, Aerospace, Telecommunications, and Manufacturing. There is no limit to technological innovation.

Just think, for example, of tools capable of communicating with technical support through real-time video sharing, thus obtaining remote support on failed or defective machinery.

Or to Virtual Tours, useful for real estate agencies, architects, engineers and the entire Industry 4.0 sector. Assisted reality can help even small companies increase efficiency and profitability.
