Food labeling: the latest regulatory updates

The topic offood labeling is of crucial importance because it affects everyone’s safety; not surprisingly, the Union of Chambers of Commerce has established the Labeling and Food Safety Portal , which holds monthly Labeling Open Days (in the form of individual online interviews).

Each event is reserved for businesses registered with local chambers of commerce to enable participating entrepreneurs to relate with experts from the Labeling Desk, which is active in more than 70 provinces. One of the latest Open Days, held on October 14, was one organized by the Milan Monza, Brianza and Lodi Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Piedmont Foreign Internationalization Center.

Regulatory updates on food labeling

Food labels, as the Labeling Portal explains, are “
the subject of intense regulatory activity
aimed at making them increasingly transparent and reliable.” Updates to the standards affect every product category and every sector of the food industry; the most recent ones, on labeling, concern the labels of certain types of beverages.

Specifically, the EEC/EU Regulation May 27, 2021, no. 1334 Amends the rules pertaining to the labeling of spirits, with particular reference to allusions to legal designations.

EEC/EU Regulation May 27, 2021, no. 1335 introduces similar changes regarding “the labeling of spirit drinks resulting from the combination of a spirit drink with one or more food products.” Some changes are also seen in the labeling of “assembled beverages”; the regulatory update (EEC/EU Regulation April 21, 2021, no. 1096) stipulates that in the case of an assembled beverage, “the spirit beverage shall bear the legal designation provided in the relevant category of spirit beverages“; where the components do not fall into any category, legal designations may be used. Finally, the regulations stipulate that “the proportion of each alcohol ingredient in the list of alcohol ingredients shall be expressed at least once as a percentage.”

The importance of food labeling

Food labels, as stated on the Labeling Portal website, “are increasingly a tool of great relevance to businesses and consumers” as “
businesses must ensure that the information on the label is correct
“.

First and foremost, proper labeling is a tool for consumer protection, as it provides consumers with all the salient information about the product in a clear and accurate manner. It also enables businesses to operate in compliance with current food safety legislation; this allows them to avoid administrative penalties or prosecution for any administrative offenses.

Complying with the provisions of EU regulations and national laws regarding labeling is therefore a primary responsibility for those in the food industry.

How to label a food correctly?

As explained earlier in this article, the mandatory label information required by law must be transparent, clearly readable, and effortless.

Thanks to the QRCode they can be found immediately. The QRCode is present in every smartphone. For example, for the Android operating system it is available for free in the QR Code Reader app . iOS 11 Apple, on the other hand, has directly included the QRCode reader by opening the camera app. The basic and necessary information you need to put on the label if you are in retail remains as follows:

  • Due date;
  • Product origin;
  • Allergens;
  • Quantity;
  • Food name;
  • Ingredients;
  • Nutritional values;
  • Name and address of the manufacturer, packer, or seller;
  • Any storage conditions and cooking instructions.

How to comply with current regulations

In order to comply with legal obligations and operate in accordance with the standards imposed by industry legislation, as well as align with any regulatory updates, if you operate in the food industry you must first of all be able to rely on adequate technological equipment. In fact, each kind of product requires the use of a specific type of label that conforms to specific standards. In the food industry, in fact, labeling methods vary significantly depending on whether the product is prepacked, loose, wrapped, or prewrapped.
