Switch off and Bonus TV: procedures for accessing bonus TV

Italian TV has embarked, albeit later than originally planned, on the “switch off” process that will lead to the adoption of a new standard for broadcasting the TV signal.

It is, in short, the “New Digital TV,” which, as MISE explains, “thanks to new technological standards, will make it possibleto improve signal quality andmake room for high-definition broadcasts.”

This will be pursued by means of a “switchoff,” i.e., the transition from the DVBT/MPEG-2 standard to DVB-T2 (“Digital Video Broadcasting – Second Generation Terrestrial”), with the subsequent adoption of the new MPEG-4 encoding.

Of course, the transition will be gradual and must be completed by 2023; in the meantime, users will have the opportunity to adapt their signal reception system and, if necessary, replace obsolete TV sets thanks to bonuses made available by the government.

What are Switch off and Bonus TV

The “switch off” is the process of transition from the old to the new technological standard for receiving television signal.

It consists of successive phases; by June 30, 2022, the 700 MHz frequency (which will be earmarked for the exclusive use of telephony services) is scheduled to be fully released, while the new DVB-T2 transmission standard will be activated between January and June 2023.

From then on, only the latest generation of TV sets-or those equipped with the appropriate decoder-will be able to receive the TV signal.

As of Oct. 20, 2021, some broadcasters (RAI and Mediaset) have already started broadcasting some channels in their bouquet with the new encoding.

The “TV Bonus” is a incentive (one 20% discount on the purchase price, up to a maximum of 100 euros), which can be used by those who want to replace their TV set with a more modern device, so that they can receive the TV signal emitted according to the new standards.

How to scrap your old TV and claim the Bonus

TV Bonus is granted to those who scrap an old TV set in order to purchase a new one.

As MISE’s official website reports, “scrapping can be done directly at participating retailers where the new TV is purchased, handing in the obsolete TV at the time of purchase and the self-certification form stating that the TV was purchased before December 22, 2018“.

The incentive, in fact, is not given to those who scrap a television set purchased after that date.

Alternatively, the obsolete appliance can be disposed of at anauthorized waste disposal site where a WEEE Center worker signs aself-certification stating that the TV has been disposed of.

The document must then be handed in at the point of sale where the TV is purchased so that the user can benefit from the discount (applicable even on already discounted prices).

What is HEVC encoding Main10

To receive the new TV signal, you do not necessarily have to buy a new TV.

Before any scrapping, it is advisable to carry out a test, to make sure whether or not your device is able to receive the signal emitted with the new encoding.

If Rai 1 and Channel 5 are already visible on the TV (on the first and fifth channels, respectively), simply check that the words “Test HEVC Main10″ appear on channel 100 (or 200): the presence of this wording indicates that the device is already capable of receiving the new MPEG-4 encoding.

HEVC” stands for “
High Efficiency Video Coding
“, which identifies the video compression standard approved in 2013.

Main 10” is one of the profiles of the first version of the same.
