How to renovate and save on business technology

Having business technologies that are always “in good shape,” capable of making us perform well in terms of productivity and turnover, is essential today to hold our own against the best Italian and European companies. The data, however, paint a less than reassuring picture. In fact, only 26 percent of domestic SMEs have the right technologies to tackle global markets and struggle to keep up with domestic ones.*

In addition, when it comes to the competitiveness of new technologies, our country ranks 25th out of 28*.

From the data, highlighted by the Uil-Eures study, “Digitization of Public Administration and Competitiveness of the Italian System,” the backwardness of the Italian system also emerges in terms of digital business technologies.

What is the reason for this gap?

Among the main reasons for the gap referred to the digital transformation, there is the lack of inclination toward innovation and exploitation of available resources (European calls for proposals, vouchers in innovation from the MISE – 68 percent of entrepreneurs are not up-to-date in this regard); but above all, the gap is due to a Failure to manage the ICT and Digital areas where sector managers, in 44 percent of cases, are engaged in managing routine maintenance and not innovation activities of information systems.

Did you know that.

“With operational and one-shot rental, you cut costs and get a state-of-the-art fleet of equipment that is among the best and most valued by workers* (*Forrester Research data), with an extension of up to five years.”

Moreover, the figure of the Innovation Manager is present in only 20 percent of companies. (Data from the Politecnico di Milano SME Digital Innovation Observatory)*.

The gap is determined also by the resistance of Italian entrepreneurs to investing for the long term, with 27% concerned about the Purchase costs of digital business services and technologies; along with the absence of digital culture and organizational skills (in 24 percent of cases), these behaviors become real brakes on technological development of the country system through its Enterprises.

Annual cost of obsolete business technology

Istat report Digitalization and technology in Italian enterprises* focuses on digitization – technology – innovation of the peninsula, taking a sample of about 280,000 firms with 3 and more employees “representative of a universe of just over one million units, corresponding to 24.0 percent of Italian firms that nonetheless produce 84.4 percent of the national value added, with 91.3 percent of the employees: it is therefore a fundamental segment of our production system. “*

It emerges that the majority of companies use a limited number of technologies and that:

“The effects of the COVID-19 epidemic represented, for companies with agile (smart-working) potential, a significant test of how an external and unpredictable factor accelerated processes with already adequate digital infrastructure but postponed due to resistance at different organizational levels. “* [i]

In order not to lose the competitive advantage, it is necessary to prepare the “cultural” ground, fostering what is called digital “maturity,” with the preparation of the technical conditions for the adoption of the appropriate applications and solutions that can increase productivity and efficiency of SMEs.

How to measure technological competitiveness

In addition to the obvious loss of turnover that companies that are not competitive in digital business technologies face, the risk is missing out on the opportunity to receive financial contributions provided by the EU; the program Digital Europe for the period 2021-2027 Of the European Parliament to Of the Council, has put in place. An ambitious economic package for recovery, which focuses mainly on what are called key areas, such as, “Data infrastructure and intelligent computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, advanced digital skills and applications in industry and public interest sectors.”

“The pandemic of COVID-19 has accelerated the digital transition. While telecommuting and distance learning have become a reality for millions of people in the EU, the limitations of the current level of digital preparedness have also often emerged. The pandemic has exacerbated existing digital skills shortages, while new inequalities are emerging due to the fact that many people either lack the necessary level of digital skills or work or study in contexts that lag behind in terms of digitization. “*

This is a program with a budget of 7.5 billion, with the possibility of full cost coverage; pillars of the funding framework include Cybersecurity and Trust and Advanced Digital Skills; To access it, it will be necessary to meet certain requirements and criteria regarding public and private sector digital innovation.

[i] Indicators such as the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), ” a composite index that synthesizes a number of relevant indicators on the digital performance of EU countries (and the evolution of their digital competitiveness) using mainly data produced by the European Statistical System (ESS), are used to take stock of Italian digitization.”

Sectors crucial to staying ahead of Digital Innovation

Crucial areas for accessing funding (such as those under the National Enterprise 4.0 Plan) include:

Key requirements include:

  • Process innovation or organizational innovation activities;
  • Expenses for newly manufactured tools and equipment to the extent and for the period they are used for the project;
  • Costs for specialized consulting services strictly functional to the implementation of the project, to the maximum extent of 10% of the total eligible costs.

Adaptation, therefore, consists of implementing some best practices in the direction oftechnological innovation of enterprises and a fundamental change in the mindset of Entrepreneurs.
