Electric mobility: data to February 2023 and incentives on domestic wallboxes

Good news on electric mobility: registered vehicles in February 2023 grew by +17.5 percent compared to the same month last year (Ministry of Infrastructure data).

There were 130,365 newly registered zero- or low-emission cars compared to 110,915 units in January-February 2022.

While the growth of the sector is obvious, the rate of utilization of incentives on electric is less obvious.

Let’s find out some data to understand what the trend of electric mobility and incentives is in the first quarter of 2023.

How the market for electric cars evolves in 2023

Although hybrid cars dominate the market (40 percent), the early months of 2023 are interesting for electric mobility.

In fact, e-cars, despite a “modest” 3.71 percent recorded the best result in February 2023 since 2015, with +54 percent growth (Unrae data).

The growth of electric cars in the first two months of 2023 recovered 20.5 percent with a growth of +54.1 percent while CNG cars had a considerable decrease (-81.8 percent) caused no doubt by the supply crisis and high costs caused by the ongoing geopolitical instability (Dataforce data).

E-car: forecast in surplus

The electric car is desired by 39% of Italians. This was revealed in a survey by the “Auto & Mobility Barometer” (Europ Assistance Group).

After the health emergency from Covid 19 people began to walk more, reevaluating sustainable means of micro mobility such as electric scooter (26%) and bicycle (52%).

For the use of these means, Italy ranks fourth in Europe, after Spain, Portugal and France, with the highest number of new users (35 percent).

Although the budget for purchasing electric cars is the lowest in Europe and hovers around 15,000 euros, as highlighted above, nearly 40 percent of respondents said they would consider purchasing an electric car in the next 12 months.

An encouraging figure, despite concerns about cost, battery charging, and range on long trips.

Issues destined to be resolved, not only by government incentives, but by investment in the sector.

In this regard, just think of the ongoing investments-for example, the French company Selectra, which has decided to set up some 3,000 fast charge points in Italy-and the evolution of the end-of-life system for batteries.

We discussed it in this article.

Electric mobility: what to do to increase its uptake?

Experts in the field state, in this regard, that in addition to simplified access to available resources, there would be a need to publicize procedures to facilitate the purchase of vehicle charging stations in the home.

These resources are expected to become available by 2024 through the implementation of the Milleproroghe Decree.

The widespread availability and deployment of electric charging stations and power matched to the actual needs of the vehicles is, moreover, one of the keys to unlocking the e-car sector, in view of the 2035 stop on gasoline vehicle registrations in the EU.

    The incentives for e-cars

Incentives for electric cars also restarted on January 10, 2023, with contributions of up to €3,000 without a car to be scrapped and €5,000 with a car to be scrapped.

Disappearing, however, is the extra bonus dedicated to families with low ISEE.

The conditions for getting the bonus are:

    -The car must not exceed the list cost of 42,700 euros including VAT;

-The car to be scrapped must be between Euro 0 and Euro 4 classes.

    The incentives for domestic wallboxes

There is also room in the Milleproroghe decree for the unlocking and renewal of incentives until 2024 for domestic columns and wallboxes with a contribution of about 8,000 euros per condominium and 1,500 euros per person (must cover 80 percent of the expense).

Enacted finally by the House and Senate, it provides a total fund of 120 million, including 2022.

Therefore, the implementing decree and the establishment of the platform where to apply are awaited.

    The decree is being implemented.

What are the best-selling e-cars in Italy?

Among the top three best-selling electric cars in Italy as of February 2023 are the Tesla Model Y(1116 registered), Fiat 500E (538) and Smart Fortwo (438) while among plug-ins are the Jeep Compass (617), Ford Kuga and Jeep Renegade.
