2021: Employment rate rising among those under 35 years old

Overall, the number of unemployed young people declines (-0.7 percent) while the employment rate of those aged 25-34 is 64.8 percent. “Between November and December 2021” – reads the note from the National Institute of Statistics – “employment rate rises most among those under 35 years old, among which is associated with a decrease in both unemployment and inactivity“.

According to EUROSTAT surveys, re-processed by ADAPT, the employment rate of the 25-29 year old population increased significantly during 2021, from 53.4 percent in the first quarter to 57.8 percent in the third quarter.

The percentages in the second and third quarters represent the highest finding in the past three years, higher even than those in the pre-pandemic period.

Youth entrepreneurship in Italy

One of the biggest growth factors for youth employment is undoubtedly business activity.

At the end of 2021, there were 475,323 youth enterprises operating in Italy, which is 454 fewer than in the same period last year.

The slightly negative figure (-0.1 percent) was due to a widespread reduction in the size of youth entrepreneurship throughout the country, affecting as many as thirteen regions.

In contrast, Trentino-Alto Adige (+4.3 percent), Emilia-Romagna (+2.2 percent), Piedmont (+1.9 percent) and Veneto (+1.6 percent) bucked the trend.

The growth of youth entrepreneurship in these regions covered all macro-sectors except for tourism and catering, which are still feeling the effects of the pandemic crisis.

The importance of entrepreneurship and youth employment is evidenced by the incentives and support measures introduced by the legislature.

The current business facilities are, in fact, aimed at young entrepreneurs, with a business to be started or established for no more than 5 years.

Specifically, these are the Measures for Self-Entrepreneurship-New Zero-Interest Businesses , which, as the MISE’s official website explains, aim to promote “the creation and development of micro and small enterprises with predominantly or wholly youth or female participation.”

The resources (150 million euros in total) will be allocated to SMEs established for a maximum of 60 months after the application is submitted.
