Cybersecurity and data protection solutions in the enterprise

The current state of the market related to cybersecurity and data protection in Italian companies is worth about 1.37 billion, with cyber attacks on the rise for 40 percent of SMEs.

This is what emerges from the latest Report of the Cybersecurity & Data Protection Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano*, produced, among others, in collaboration with Assolombarda, Microsoft and RAI.

From the Report, we find that in 2020 theemergence was alsofelt at the level of security and data protection, with:

  • Increased budget in cybersecurity for 40 percent of large enterprises;
  • Decrease in budget dedicated to Security for 19% of companies;
  • 52% spending dedicated to security solutions;
  • Network & Wireless Security, Endpoint Security and Data Security as security solutions that attract more resources;
  • Poorly mature cybersecurity management, with a data protection officer in only 69% of companies.

Influencing security management the most in recent months are Cloud, Smart Working and Big Data at the forefront. Let’s find out what were the main investments in this regard by SMEs, and the best performing technology solutions to adopt.

Unprecedented increase in cyber attacks

In the second quarter of 2020, as Wired* magazine points out based on research by Exprivia’s Cybersecurity Observatory, cyber attacks in Italy increased by 250 percent showing how the increase in “agile” or smart working workers has made the system more vulnerable.

“Home-grown” technologies unsuitable for dealing with attacks and lack of targeted investment in cybersecurity by SMEs are constant risk factors.

Cybercrime has found fertile ground mainly because of a widespread lack of digital literacy, even in individual citizens, and the inadequacy with which companies and public agencies protect sensitive data and information systems,” Domenico Raguseo, director of cybersecurity at Exprivia.

The most sought-after solutions in 2020 to improve enterprise security

The main investments in the sector are divided into:

  • Technologies to protect infrastructure from external attacks – Network & Wireless Security(33%);
  • Protection of network-connected devices – Endpoint Security(23%);
  • Systems to protect corporate and individual user data – Data Security(14%).

Among investments made by companies to adapt business technologies to the needs of protecting data and systems, Italy still lags behind more advanced countries with the:

  • 13% of spending on the security of cloud environments;
  • 12% for Application Security;
  • 3% for IoT (Internet of Things) security;

The main investments of SMEs are directed to:

  • Security event monitoring systems (16%);
  • Managing and monitoring user access to data and applications (14%);
  • Vulnerability assessment, security of systems, applications or networks (14%);
  • Cyber risk analysis of enterprise systems and assessment of compliance with security standards (12%);
  • Network traffic monitoring solutions to identify and block unauthorized access (11%).

Business benefits for those who have invested in corporate privacy strategies

Compared with the previous year, in 2020, 70 percent of companies that implemented corporate privacy protection strategies said they received more economic benefits, with a return on investment in data privacy. This is what emerges from the Cisco 2020 Data Privacy Study, carried out on 2,800 companies in 13 countries, including Italy.

Based on interviews conducted by the Observatory, it appears that only 59 percent of SMEs have adapted to the cybersecurity emergency, compared with a +49 percent of cyber attacks suffered. Why?

Lack of “vision” (only 22 percent planned to invest in security) and unsuitable systems such as personal devices and home networks were important influences.

In addition to these issues, 20 percent have had to reduce their security budget as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, and a reported 32 percent have no budget to devote to corporate security issues.

The main investments of SMEs went into basic security solutions (41 percent) such as antivirus, firewall and only 37 percent thought of more sophisticated solutions, such as Intrusion Detection or Identity & Access Management systems.

Finally, “28 percent have turned to consultants to improve cybersecurity management in the company, 18 percent have introduced dedicated skills such as Security Analyst or Security Administrator, and 15 percent have taken out insurance policies to transfer cyber risk.” (Observers.net)

RackStation 2021 for data protection with Synology NAS.

  • It supports Windows AD, Azure AD and LDAP to interact seamlessly with existing directory services.
  • Offers simple migration of files along with domain ACL permissions from Windows Server.
  • Easily manages the use of shared folder storage capacity by configuring user quota.

“Traditional file servers are not up to the task of enabling easy remote access, much less collaboration on documents, presentations or spreadsheets. Cloud solutions public, on the other hand, raise concerns about data ownership and require expensive subscriptions, especially for companies that store large amounts of data. While some use a combination of traditional file servers and public cloud solutions, but the lack of integration between them results in scattered files and repeated data, not to mention high software, Client Access License (CAL) and additional recurring subscription costs.” (Synology.co.uk)

With the Synology NAS you can:

  • Synchronize important files directly to computers using the Synology Drive client for Windows, Mac and Ubuntu;
  • On Windows 10 clients, on-demand synchronization allows files to be downloaded only when they are open for greater efficiency;
