Condominium charging stations: renewable energy sources

Theinstallation of condominium charging stations is an important step toward a low-carbon future and through the transition to greener electric vehicles.

The installation of wallboxes and charging stations in apartment buildings is becoming increasingly common in Italy. That is why it is important to combine the phenomenon with renewable sources. There are mainly two reasons for this: the first is the need to reach the target imposed by the 3030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on time.

The second is the significant economic savings and lower environmental impact, from which we could all benefit.

In this article we explore renewable energy sources used for charging stations, illustrating the environmental benefits and energy-saving opportunities offered by sustainable technologies.

Various renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic, wind, and geothermal, are analyzed, and their impact on transportation sustainability and the environment is examined.

Condominium charging columns and solar power

As of February 2022, there were about 1 million photovoltaic panels installed on the roofs of Italian apartment buildings, a figure set to grow year by year. (Source: Il Sole24ore). *

The use of solar energy to power the
condominium charging stations
represents a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.

In fact, photovoltaic solar panels, installed on the roofs of condominium buildings, capture the sun’s energy and turn it into clean electricity. This energy can be used to power electric vehicle charging stations.

Solar energy is a renewable, inexhaustible source with no greenhouse gas emissions. Installing solar panels on apartment buildings not only reduces environmental impact, but can also generate financial savings for apartment buildings by reducing energy costs and promoting self-consumption.

Wind power for condominium charging stations

Another renewable energy source that can be used to power condominium charging stations iswind power.

In 2022, 19 GW were installed in Europe with an increase of 40%*, and although wind power in Italy is not growing much, it has retained “7th place in the continental ranking for total cumulative power.” *

Wind power harnesses the power of wind to generate electricity. Installing small wind turb ines on the roofs of apartment buildings can provide a clean, renewable energy source for charging electric vehicles.

Wind power is particularly suitable for coastal areas and areas exposed to constant winds. By using wind power to power charging stations, apartment buildings can help reduce carbon emissions and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

The installation of geothermal condominium systems

The installation of a geothermal system within an apartment building requires a preliminary assessment of the geological characteristics of the surrounding terrain.

It is important to identify the presence of geothermal aquifers or underground aquifers, which allow maximum benefit from geothermal energy.

Typically, geothermal heat pumps are used, which take heat from the ground and transfer it to building heating or cooling systems and electric vehicle charging stations.

This type of system requires good design and proper installation by experienced professionals in the field. However, once installed, the geothermal system offers significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency and savings on heating and cooling costs for condominium buildings.

Benefits of using geothermal energy in condominium charging stations

The use of geothermal energy to power condominium charging stations offers numerous advantages both environmentally and economically.

Environmentally, geothermal energy is a clean and sustainable source, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

By using this renewable energy source to charge electric vehicles, apartment buildings can actively contribute to the transition to a more sustainable, low-emission mobility system.

From an economic point of view, geothermal energy can achieve significant energy savings and reduce the operating costs of condominium buildings. Geothermal energy is a free and constant source of heat that can be harnessed efficiently.

In conclusion, there is no one renewable energy source that is better than the others, but all of them together can help us achieve not only the goals of Agenda 3030 but also save on energy costs and live more sustainably.

European directives, where do we stand?

The promotion of renewable energy sources for charging stations

La 2019-2020 european delegation law* was finally approved by the Senate, including provisions to transpose some European Directives and resolve ongoing infringement procedures. Highlighted among its contents are the promotion of renewable energy sources and simplifications for the installation of electric car charging stations. *

*Reception of European directives and closure of infringement procedures.

Promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and common rules for the internal electricity market

Articles 5 and 12 of the enabling act specifically address the environment and ecological transition.

In particular, criteria for theimplementation of directives promoting the use of energy from renewable sources and common rules for the internal electricity market are established. The aim is to simplify the deployment of electric car charging stations.

Reorganization of regulations on self-consumption and incentives for renewable energy

The enabling act entrusts the government with the task of rearranging regulations on self-consumption in order to encourage the implementation of self-consumption systems, the installation of energy production systems in existing buildings and the identification of incentives for the establishment of renewable energy communities.

This will create a favorable framework for promoting and facilitating the development of self-consumption, including collective form, as required by the European Union.

Thefinal approval of this law is an important step toward the promotion of renewable energy sources and the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, thus contributing to the shift toward a more sustainable energy system and the advancement of the European Union’s environmental goals.
