Electric car charging stations: why they are important for the environment

The charging stations for electric cars have less impact on environmental pollution.

Electric cars pollute less than combustion cars, and charging stations and columns are their “refueling points.”

Fighting air pollution, a priority for Europe

The European Parliament has legislated a stop on gasoline, hybrid or diesel cars for all 27 member countries.

Essentially only those engines that do not produce carbon dioxide, such as electric motors, will be allowed.

Why electric charging stations are good for the environment

The emissions of electric cars are lower than gasoline cars. They ensure a carbon footprint (ecological footprint on the planet) between 20 -27% less than combustion vehicles.

This is noted by Green NCAP* analysis of the Life Cycle Assesment (LCA) of gasoline, diesel and hybrid cars and their impact in manufacturing processes. (Data www.altroconsumo.it)

The green NCAP project is a European program to assess the life cycle environmental impact of vehicles (Life Cycle Assessment).

In the carbon footprint, not only emissions are studied but also the impact of the vehicle from its production to demolition (including raw material extraction), and the carbon footprint expresses the impact on global warming i.e., greenhouse gas emissions.

Tests conducted say, therefore, that electric cars impact the environment less in terms of greenhouse gases than conventional combustion vehicles, up to 30 percent less.

Power remains the strength of electric cars because it comes from renewable sources.

The most relevant aspect, speaking of electric vehicles, concerns charging stations or columns , the deployment of which will have to intensify in the coming years to ensure sufficient coverage for registrations of new “green cars.”

Electric charging points in Italy: a gap to be closed by 2030

Charging points in Italy are the sore point of the situation.

They are, in fact, lower than in Europe in spite of above-average EV registration.

To align with the target, it will therefore be necessary to have at least 6.8 million charging stations by 2030 (research conducted on behalf of Acea, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association).

Charging stations adequate for the growth of electric vehicles

To implement this plan would require installing an average of 14 thousand charging points per week, more than seven times the current number (about 2,000).

Italy, with about 30,704 electric columns installed (Data: E-Motus) and the 21,400 planned by the NRP by 2025, however, is not keeping pace with market trends given the +128 percent increase in electric vehicles registered in 2021.

Gap also high for public “charging points” worldwide with a ratio of 1 to 9.2 (Bloomberg Nef analysis) compared to electric cars on the road; gap set to widen in coming years.

Finally, a growth rate of 1 electric vehicle every 3 seconds is estimated with an achievement of 26.4 cars by the end of the year.
